Sonic Mania Dev Returns For Origins Plus Despite Crunch, Launch Drama

Indie studio Headcannon is working with Sega again for Sonic Origins Plus, despite some drama back when the original Game launched last year. This came after Origins was released in a buggy, unstable state, with Headcannon blaming tight deadlines set by Sega for the issues that players encountered.

But now, the two parties are friends again. Headcannon, best known for Sonic Mania, has confirmed it is collaborating with Sega and Sonic Team once again for Sonic Origins Plus - an expansion that will add more Games, characters, and bug fixes.

"We're happy to announce that we’ve once again cooperated with Sega to update this project," reads an announcement on the Headcannon Twitter page.

After going over some of the new additions - playable Amy, Knuckles in Sonic CD - Headcannon then goes over the most controversial aspect of the Game: performance issues.

"Alongside Sega’s work in updating the collection, we were also able to supply a few additional updates and enhancements to help make the title the best it can be," says Headcannon. "We appreciate their openness to our feedback and suggestions."

Back when Sonic Origins first launched, Headcannon implied that its contribution to the Game had to be made under crunch conditions due to tight deadlines.

"I won't lie and say that there weren't issues in what we gave to Sega, but what is in Origins is also not what we turned in," said Headcannon founder and programmer, Simon Thomley. "Integration introduced some wild bugs that conventional logic would have one believe were our responsibility - a lot of them aren't."

He continued, sharing some insight into how development went: "We were outsiders creating a separate project that was then wrangled into something entirely different. We knew going in that there would be a major time crunch and we worked ourselves into the ground to meet it just so this would even be made and released."

Despite this, Thomley seems excited to work on Sonic Origins again, hopefully indicating the development is going much better this time around. We'll have to wait until Origins Plus launches on June 23 to see if other issues have been ironed out too.
