The Last Of Us Was Originally Going To End In San Francisco

There are only two episodes to go until season one of HBO's The Last Of Us comes to an end. If you've played the Game, you know where we're heading. If you haven't and want to avoid spoilers, stop reading now, as the article covers the original ending of the Game was going to be a far happier one in San Francisco.

The first part of Joel and Ellie's journey concludes with the former blasting his way out of a hospital John Wick-style. He's doing it to save Ellie who is about to undergo surgery that will end her life, and then so he can get her out of the building and to safety.

According to Neil Druckmann, that wasn't the original idea. When the story was first pitched, Joel and Ellie happily settled down in San Francisco. That was revealed to EuroGamer a long time ago. However, the upcoming reveal of what to expect from The Last Of Us' multiplayer spinoff, which will be set in San Francisco, has resulted in that info resurfacing.

Shared by Naughty Dog Info, the tweet above questions whether the new characters in the multiplayer Game will be the people Joel and Ellie were going to settle down with. It's certainly possible, and maybe when the Game does eventually launch, we will experience a part of The Last Of Us universe that has existed for more than a decade.

When season one of HBO's adaptation comes to an end, it will presumably finish in the same place as the first Game. Although its creators have already admitted Part 2 can't be told in a single season, the show will eventually catch up with the Games. If HBO wants to carry on with the show once it runs out of Games, then telling the stories of how people in other parts of the world have been tackling the apocalypse might be the way to do it.
